Member States and Sanctions

Member States’ involvement with UN sanctions can take a number of different forms:

  • As a member of the Security Council, a state participates in the formulation of UN sanctions and as a Member State is subject to compliance obligations
  • States can be also be a focus of UN sanctions
  • States can be a neighbor to a state that is the focus of UN sanctions, thus acquiring a heightened burden for the implementation of sanctions
  • States can also be far removed from sanctioned regions either because of their geographic location or due to their political and economic situation
